Kim Williams is a Perth music stalwart. From his days in the Holy Rollers to The White Swallows and Love Letters, he has been a staple of the scene. But his longest standing and most popular project is the folk rock / power pop band THE SUMMER SUNS.

The band formed in Perth, Western Australia in 1986 as one off project to release Kim Williams’ songs “Honeypearl” & “Rachel Anne”. As Kim recalls in the liner notes to “Of A Girl: The Complete Singles”, it involved another well-known Perth musician: “I was introduced to Dom Mariani via Darryl Mather when he was visiting Perth on his own pop mission. We bonded over a mutual regard for Big Star, The dB’s, The Shoes, The Plimsouls, The Windbreakers, etc., and ultimately he liked my songs enough to take time out from The Stems to make the record. At this stage there was no ambition for the project to be anything other than a one-off. Cut the record, play a couple of shows, mail out some review copies, stock the record stores and hope it sold. This we did to great acclaim and then returned to our respective regular bands.”

The popularity of the single, specially overseas thanks to a stellar review in seminal pop-rock magazine Bucketfull of Brains, saw The Summer Suns become a more permanent fixture in the Perth scene, 1986 – 1996, releasing records on most of the world’s best indie labels including Easter, Waterfront, Bus Stop, Parasol, Spring & Get Hip. Now, for the first time ever, all those six singles are compiled chronologically in “Of A Girl: The Complete Singles”, a limited edition LP, which includes a 4-page color insert with notes by Kim Williams and lots of pictures and other rare ephemera.

Kim Williams es toda una personalidad en la escena musical de Perth. Desde su época en Holy Rollers hasta The White Swallows y Love Letters, ha sido un referente de la escena. Pero su proyecto más longevo y popular es la banda de folk rock/power pop THE SUMMER SUNS.

La banda se formó en Perth, Australia Occidental, en 1986 como un proyecto único para lanzar las canciones de Kim Williams, "Honeypearl" y "Rachel Anne". La popularidad del sencillo, especialmente en el extranjero gracias a una excelente reseña en la influyente revista de pop-rock Bucketfull of Brains, convirtió a The Summer Suns en un referente permanente de la escena musical de Perth entre 1986 y 1996, publicando discos en la mayoría de los mejores sellos indie del mundo, como Easter, Waterfront, Bus Stop, Parasol, Spring y Get Hip. CANCER MOON, RESGUARDO DE VANGUARDIA

Ahora que ya sumamos edad y cierta perspectiva, es cuando quizá podamos empezar a calibrar las cosas y confirmar nuestros viejos impulsos y sospechas. Cosas que son como son, hasta que descubrimos... otras cosas. Quizá sea un observatorio esculpido por un instinto de supervivencia y curiosidad, el que nos permita desentrañar la transformación de sonidos, conductas, ruidos y talantes, alrededor de las músicas eléctricas. Eso que hemos convenido en llamar y distinguir, a falta de otra nomenclatura, como rock'n'roll. Muchas de nuestras excitaciones provienen de un voyeurismo audiófilo en vibración y alerta permanente. Y en cada pasaje histórico nos hemos dado de bruces con una feroz lucha entre la obsolescencia acomodada, cuando no calco sonrojante de lo previo, y la avanzadilla tendente a dicha alteración sónica. Hablamos del rock como ideal romántico (underground) de vida, no como industria voraz o vana evocación nostálgica. Por si necesita aclaración.

Acostumbrados, en ese extremo anguloso, a héroes lejanos, ya se sabe Velvet Underground, Can, Stooges, Sonic Youth, Pere Ubu, Tom Verlaine, Johnny Thunders, Brian Eno, Low, Suicide, Spacemen 3, Gilla Band, Liars, The Fall, Animal Collective, The Gun Club, Drahla, Gong, y el etcétera de cada uno; nunca nos habíamos sentido tan cerca geográfica y sentimentalmente como cuando apareció CANCER MOON. Ellos, como los citados, rompían con el rock formulario, para décadas después seguir siendo paradigma de singularidad, osadía y peligro. Esencias y raíces de ese rock'n'roll, cuya ideología y naturaleza es ir siempre más allá. Sobre todo más allá del propio rock'n'roll, al menos del ya prescrito y procesado, y de sus castrantes y solipsistas límites. Es su salvavidas. Y el nuestro. Eludir esa responsabilidad crucial acercaría su óbito o descrédito. Pero aguarda el resguardo de la vanguardia, y el estímulo del riesgo, a los que Yon Zamarripa y Josetxo Anitua se hicieron adictos, siempre desde una azotea ilustrada, un genio intuitivo y una entrega hasta corrosiva.

Reconocer aquel ideal romántico del rock en una cornucopia de intercambios y variaciones desemboca, casi sin querer, en experimento, carácter y diablura. Ahí se movieron Cancer Moon y esta su obra cumbre de 1994, que ahora disfrutamos de nuevo en su edición más cuidada, extendida y especial. No hace mucho alguien escribió que el romanticismo rock era travesura de occidentales malcriados. Cómo no reconocerse en algo tan preciso y cierto. Y a la vez tan impreciso e incierto cuando volvemos a sumergirnos con deleite en "Moor Room", brillante artefacto que congeniaba lo más visceral con lo más sagrado del ser humano, lo físico con lo metafísico.

Cancer Moon was a rock music group founded in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) in 1988. As a group they did not officially disband, but in 1996 they ceased their public activity.

The group produced a sound between noise rock and alternative rock, which in those 90s began to emerge in Spain with groups like Surfin' Bichos, 713avo Amor or The Pantano Boas. They are considered one of the founding groups of noise in Spain. Cancer Moon handled among their influences groups like The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth or Television.

They published three albums, each one on a different label due to their problems in finding a record company in which they fit: “Hunted By The Snake” (Polar, 1990), “Flock, Colibri, Oil” (Munster, 1992) and “Moor rooM” (Radiation, 1994). The latter was chosen as the best national album of the year by the music magazine Rockdelux.

For years Erik kept a low profile, but never stopped recording music, playing with friends like The Octopus Frontier, or even touring the United States and Europe with Jon Dee Graham. In late 2012, Spring Records released a 4-song EP titled “Free Range” on vinyl, which received rave reviews. Since then, Erik has kept busy putting out more new recordings through his bandcamp page, playing live shows, and touring Spain a couple of times. In 2016, Hanky Panky released “So The Wind Won't Blow It All Away” his first full-length album in over 20 years. The album garnered much critical acclaim and was the #1 album of the year on John Borack's influential “Power Pop Plus List.”

After touring Spain in 2017 as Erik Voeks & The Spanglish Settlement, Erik, Juan Ferrari, Pepe Bermejo, and Patrick Hawley decided to record an album together. Plans were made for the four of them to reunite in Spain to finish the album, but the pandemic interfered and the recording process took a long and winding road. The first and only solo outing from Honeybus founder member Pete Dello is a highly regarded album by not only Honeybus fans and '60's-'70's collectors, but by anyone who has been lucky enough to fall into its magic spell. Though reissued several times, this is the first ever reissue to feature the original album’s mix,on CD and as Thomas Walsh states in the liner notes, "it’s a different musical animal altogether. Some of the songs feature alternate vocals, different instrumentation, different lead and harmony vocal melody lines, extra brass, no brass...all in all a revelation."

En ese punto donde estilo como proceder elegante y género o método convergen. Ahí, exactamente ahí, se sitúan Winterafter. Será más fácil comprender la irrupción de este nuevo cuarteto bilbaíno, si nos remitimos casi dos décadas atrás al álbum que dejaron The Shannons ("Scripts And Stories", Rock Indiana, 2004). Eduardo Orbezua, guitarra, voz y composición de diez de las once canciones, retoma aquella vieja historia con nuevos aires y acompañantes en busca de un todo compacto, con esa solidez que sólo crece a base de complicidad, trabajo y lealtad. J.J. Espizua (guitarra y autor de la canción "1979"), Rudy Mental (bajo) y Claudio Martín (batería), más las aportaciones de Santi Campos (teclados), Pit Idoyaga y Marc Tena (voces), con la mezcla final de Iñigo Escauriaza en El Submarino de Mungia.

"Rivers of memory", pocos títulos tan bellos y apropiados, nos traslada por un caudal de melodías ad eternum, cocinadas a fuego lento, con el dibujo de finos afluentes que siempre van a desembocar en ese mar de tranquilidad y reposo que es el folk-rock americano de trazo primoroso y gentil. Winterafter se aplican en ese esmero permanente como orfebres ensimismados con esa pequeña joya que acarician hasta dotarla de vida propia, de un latir humano, si por tal entendemos nuestra capacidad benefactora. Las once piezas se hermanan en esa pesquisa de la armonía impecable (basta asomarse como ejemplo a las segundas voces y coros de "For every soul" y "From under pain", o a la flema en suspensión de "Sometimes" y "Windward"...) ¿Cómo interpretar todo ello? Vamos a llamarlo aroma.

These days, singer-songwriter and actor David Blue tends to be remembered only in relation to Bob Dylan. A member of the supporting cast in mid-60s Greenwich Village and The Rolling Thunder Revue. Yet to categorise Blue in this way is reductionist, and does him an injustice. He was something of an archetype of the 60s generation of Greenwich Village singer-songwriters. Yet, esteemed by his peers, he was overlooked. He released seven albums in a decade, and his acting career was shaping up when he died suddenly at the age of just 41.

His passing was barely noted in the rock press, and in the subsequent years Blue was all but forgotten. Of late, though, that’s changed. His albums started to reappear on CD on small labels and, in 2020, both Rolling Stone and Mojo magazines published major reappraisals. Blue – at last – was getting the attention denied him in life.

It wasn’t until 1965 that Blue, as Dave Cohen, released his first recordings – three songs on Elektra’s Singer Songwriter Project. All betrayed a debt to pre-electric Dylan. But then again, so did much else coming out of Greenwich Village at the time. Elektra contracted Blue to do his own album, and in 1966 “David Blue” was released – his first recording to appear under that name. Electric folk rock with a garage band attitude, somewhat in debt to Highway 61, it didn’t sell well. Shortly after the album’s release Blue formed and toured with The American Patrol, a four-piece rock band, recording an album for Elektra that was never released.

Now, for the first time, Hanky Panky and Mapache release those historical abandoned American Patrol recordings, along with the three tracks included on Elektra’s 1965 LP Singer Songwriter Project, as David Blue And The American Patrol “The Lost 1967 Elektra Recordings & More” and “David Blue”, his self-titled 1966 debut album, on two exclusive vinyl editions limited to 500 copies each.
