*** The Undercliff Suite comprises five short instrumental pieces composed as incidental music for Mark Brend’s debut novel, Undercliff.

*** Brend formed farina with former Palace of Light / Mabel Joy bandmate Matt Gale and drummer/horn player Cliff Glanfield in 1995. Originally active until 2005, fariña released two acclaimed albums on Picked Egg. The Undercliff Suite is their first release since reconvening in 2018.

Mark Brend –autoharp, bass, dulcimer, found sounds, glockenspiel ,guitar, keyboards, melodica, percussion, and ukulele.

Matt Gale –accordion, guitar, harmonica, keyboards, mandolin and piano.

Cliff Glanfield – drums, flugelhorn, trumpet.

The Undercliff Suite was recorded in Devon, London and Banstead, and mixed and mastered at Hummingbird Studios, London.

Undercliff, 1973 is incidental music for Undercliff (Mark Brend's debut novel), by Mark's band, Fariña, with a video by Mark and Darren Hayman (Hefner, Thankful Villages). 

Mark Brend is a writer and a musician based in Devon. He has written several books about music, and has released six albums under various artist names (among them The Palace Of Light and Mabel Joy, whose albums have been reissued on Hanky Panky). Undercliff is Mark’s first novel, and will be published on May 30th by Hornet Books.

Fariña (Mark Brend, Cliff Glanfield, Matt Gale, and latterly, Tim Conway) were originally active between 1996 and 2006, releasing two albums (ThreePeople, 2001, and Allotments, 2006) and several singles. The Undercliff incidental music is their first release since reforming this year. Further Undercliff incidental music will be released on Hanky Panky Records later in 2019.

Undercliff

It’s the summer of 1972, and 30-something divorcee Martyn returns to London after some years away. He joins the Olive Grove, a religious community, where he forms a relationship with Amelia. Over time Martyn becomes suspicious of the Olive Grove’s leaders, a pair of apparently ordinary men who can speak in perfect unison, known as the Two. 

A sequence of ambiguous events might indicate that the Two have malign purposes, though Martyn cannot be sure. Things come to a head when Amelia breaks off with Martyn and vanishes. He travels to Devon, where the Olive Grove has a retreat house, in search of Amelia and the truth about the Olive Grove. There, events take increasinglyodd and unexpected turns.

Mark Brend, es un escritor y músico radicado en Devon (Reino Unido). Su nombre no resultará del todo ajeno ya que fue guitarrista y compositor en los grupos The Palace Of Light y Mabel Joy, cuyos únicos discos fueron reeditados por Hanky Panky. Entre 1996 y 2006, junto a Cliff Glanfield, Matt Gale y Tim Conway, estuvo al frente de Fariña, publicando dos discos "Three People" (2001) y "Allotments" (2006). Más recientemente ha editado música cada vez más experimental como Ghostwriter. 

Como escritor ha publicado varios libros sobre música, entre los que destacan: "American Troubadours", "Sounds Of Tomorrow" y "Strange Sounds". El próximo 30 de mayo se publica en el Reino Unido su primera novela, Undercliff (Hornet Books). Para acompañarla Mark ha compuesto "Undercliff, 1973", música incidental interpretada por unos reunificados Fariña. Hanky Panky Records publicará más música de "Undercliff, 1973" este próximo verano.
