*** Following a similar recording process as in 2018’s acclaimed “El Tapado”, UK Americana pioneer ALAN TYLER (The Rockingbirds) releases his new solo album, Made In MIddlesex.

*** Co- produced at Famous Times by Sean Read (Edwyn Collins, Dexys Midnight Runners…), and featuring contributions from Patrick Ralla (The Hanging Stars), Eddie Real and Rick Batey.

*** Album launch at What's Cookin', Leytonstone, London on the 8th December, with more live dates to follow.

Made In Middlesex is the new album from Alan Tyler, lead singer and main songwriter for the much-loved London country band The Rockingbirds. It presents a set of songs clearly reflecting the period during which it was recorded; a time both febrile and uncertain interspersed with longueurs of enforced quiet and reflection. A mix of the public and the personal, thoughts on life’s landmarks and inevitable change, retaining more than a hint of self-deprecation and country leanings.

Its recording mirrored the process embraced for 2018’s acclaimed El Tapado, with tracks initially laid down on an OP-1 programmable synthesiser, and further contributions added remotely or in sessions at Sean Read’s Famous Times studio. Half the songs were recorded entirely at Alan’s parents’ home in Kenton on the north-west outskirts of London – hence Made In Middlesex – during the lockdown spring of 2020; others are enhanced by Patrick Ralla (electric guitar and backing vocals), Eddie Real (drums) and Rick Batey (bass guitar) with Sean adding backing vocals, keyboards, and brass.

The album’s opener, ‘Somewhere Better’, first surfaced in the distant days of autumn 2019, reflecting hopes of some more positive resolution to the polarised atmospheres of that particular season. Its realisation perhaps imagined in the upbeat jangle of ‘Spring’ where harpsichord effects celebrate fresh starts and challenges. Both ‘Mercy’ and ‘Saint Saturnine’ carry airs of folky reminiscence and dashes of regret while ‘Lucky People’ with its definite lean towards ‘on hold’ muzak reflects wryly on the ‘click and collect’ automated lifestyles of our ‘new normal’. ‘Yesterday’s Chips’ [which Tyler describes as a "cancel culture cautionary tale"] combines a nice play on an old cliché with gentle self-deflation; a tongue-in-cheek caper, as is ‘Write Another Country Song’ which delightfully has its cake and eats it too.

‘Write Another Country Song’ had its first outing as part of We Love The Betsey Too an online celebration and fund-raiser for The Betsey Trotwood pub located on Farringdon Road in London’s Clerkenwell where Alan hosts the long-standing Come Down & Meet The Folks club. The reopening of both the pub and the club herald a return of better days; Made In Middlesex arriving to soundtrack them is right, proper, and most welcome.

Limited edition, 500 copies only!

*** ORDER here // Comprar aquí ***

- Limited edition 500 copies.

Like the other more familiar and phenomenally successful duos Goffin/King, Barry/Greenwich or Mann/Weil, Peter Anders and Vini Poncia also graduated from the Brill Building era school of songwriting. Friends since high school, Anders and Poncia debuted as members of the Providence, Rhode Island vocal group The Videls whose second single "Mister Lonely" (written by Anders-Poncia) proved to be a moderate national hit (#73 on Cash Box and Billboard) in early 1960. It would be five more years before the duo’s pièce de résistance, The Trade Winds’ "New York’s A Lonely Town", would appear on the legendary Red Bird label (started by George Goldner and songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1964). An East Coast (though California molded) surf music anthem, New York’s A Lonely Town had impressed both Phil Spector (with whom Anders and Poncia had enjoyed a brief working association, writing songs for The Ronettes, The Crystals or Darlene Love) and Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson. They also worked on an Elvis Presley film score – “Harum Scarum”.

After releasing albums as The Trade Winds and The Innocence, as well writing and releasing a bunch of songs under various guises for Kama Sutra and Buddah Records, Anders & Poncia signed to Warner Bros in 1969. Produced by Richard Perry (Captain Beefheart, Fats Domino, Tiny Tim…), and featuring the Los Angeles A-Team of sessioneers (later known as “The Wrecking Crew”), their only album features ten original compositions and a version of Leiber & Stoller’s “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” (with some great bottleneck guitar by Ry Cooder). Reissued here for the first time these eleven brilliant and extraordinarily powerful tracks are ripe for rediscovery. As the liner notes state: “listen to Anders & Poncia … and you have found your poets.”

Y es que, tal y como rezan las notas del album: “listen to Anders & Poncia … and you have found your poets.

"Jack's one of the modern-day masters. His creations are on par with Mozart and the composers of the Renaissance" Neil Young

Best known as the right-hand-man and arranger of producer Phil Spector and for his work with the Rolling Stones or Neil Young, among many others, Bernard Alfred “Jack” Nitzsche also worked extensively in film scores, notably for films such as Performance, The Exorcist and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (in 1983, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for co-writing "Up Where We Belong").

By the early Sixties, Jack Nitzsche was already making a name for himself on the West Coast music scene, especially because of his phenomenal success scoring big hits for Phil Spector. His studio prowess was in such heavy demand that it ultimately led to Nitzsche wanting to branch out on his own. A recording deal as a solo artist with Reprise Records was signed and Nitzsche scored one of the label’s first pop hits with his first single, the instrumental “The Lonely Surfer”. It spent eight weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 charts, peaking at #39 on September 13, 1963.

Now, for the first time ever, all seven of these instrumental Reprise singles, produced by Jimmy Bowen and released under Jack Nitzsche's own name between July 1963 and October 1965 -- some of the later ones credited to Nitzsche as producer -- have finally been compiled together for this vinyl LP collection. Among the many highlights on this collection is "The Last Race", a hot rod go-go rockin' instrumental which Nitzsche had originally composed for Village of the Giants (1965), that found new life again some forty-plus years later when it was used during the opening sequence of Quentin Tarantino's film Death Proof, part of Grindhouse (2007).

As a bonus, the originally unreleased 1966 recording “Surf Finger” is included. Originally titled "The Blow Up", this stunning Cooper/Nitzsche composition showcased their fascination with the Antonioni movie as they wrote it as somewhere between a film theme and a surf record.
