The Silos, the still-kicking band Walter Salas-Humara co-founded in New York’s post-punk ‘80s scene played Alt-Rock, Alt-Country, and Americana before any critics coined those terms. They were named Best New Artist in the Rolling Stone magazine critics' poll in 1987 after the release of Cuba. The album has since been considered a stone-cold classic, being hugely influential in the so-called Americana or alternative country scene that followed in its wake. “Cuba is one of those albums that has become a kind of talisman among true music fans. This gatefold double LP 35th anniversary special edition, includes the additional album The Bird Album Live On KCRW. Recorded on April 18, 1990, shortly after the release of their self-titled third album for RCA Records, The Silos performed about 75 minutes of music for the SNAP alternative music radio program. Broadcast on KCRW in Santa Monica, California, near Los Angeles, it features versions of all but one song from that third album. Both of the singer-songwriter-guitarists from the band's early days, Walter Salas-Humara and Bob Rupe, were in the line-up for this broadcast which also included Graham Maby on bass, Brian Doherty on drums, and Kenny Margolis on keyboard.

Salas-Humara’s legacy would seem secure; his name is on 24 albums, his Horse Paintings hang in homes and galleries around the world, and his WaltersDogs portraits even appeared in the film “Get Him to the Greek” (Nicholas Stoller, 20210). but he’s hardly ready to call it a day: The Silos have a new album out now called Family and are currently touring the world.

The Silos, la banda que Walter Salas-Humara cofundó en la efervescente escena post-punk de los años 80 de Nueva York, tocaba Alt-Rock, Alt-Country y Americana antes de que los críticos acuñaran esos términos. En 1987 fueron elegidos Mejor Artista Nuevo en la encuesta de críticos de la revista Rolling Stone, después del lanzamiento de Cuba. Desde entonces, el status del álbum no ha hecho sino crecer, y hoy en día se le considera un clásico, siendo enormemente influyente en la llamada escena Americana o country alternativa que siguió a su paso. Esta edición especial 35 aniversario en formato doble LP incluye también el disco The Bird Album Live On KCRW, grabado el 18 de abril de 1990, poco después del lanzamiento de su tercer álbum homónimo para RCA Records. The Silos interpretaron alrededor de 75 minutos de música para el programa de radio de música alternativa SNAP. The music contained on this LP was created in a unique historical moment -the late 60’s and early 70’s- when the lines that had long divided “serious” from “popular” music had begun to dissolve. In its ambition and eclecticism, The Neon Philharmonic’s work compares favorably to that of such contemporaries as Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, and The Beatles -all of whom viewed pop song forms as vehicles for more than two-and-a-half minutes of verse/chorus/verse. 

Not a group so much as a project, the Neon Philharmonic compromised vocalist Don Gant and Tupper Saussy, a decidedly unconventional songwriter/arranger/keyboardist who was the duo’s guiding creative force. Signed to Warner Bros. Records, their debut single “Morning Girl” quickly climbed to No. 17 on the Billboard chart in April 1969 and was nominated for two Grammy Awards. By year’s end the duo had released two more singles and two LP’s, The Moth Confesses and The Neon Philharmonic, recorded at the Acuff-Rose studios in Nashville and featuring a host of top-flight session players (Norbert Putnam, Jerry Kerrigan, Kenneth Buttrey, Chip Young…). 

The Neon Philharmonic recorded the material collected on this album during an extended period of studio activity in 1970-71. The thirteen songs assembled here on To Be Continued—five A-sides, five B-sides, and three songs unissued at the time—comprise a third Neon Philharmonic album quite different from its predecessors, largely because it was never envisioned as an album at all. After waiting for another “Morning Girl” for more than two years (only “Heighdy-Ho Princess” grazed the outer limits of the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1970), Warner Bros. gave up and dropped the group in mid-1971, leaving this period of The Neon Philharmonic’s work unknown and unavailable to all but the most dogged collectors of promo 45s for the next several decades. Now all those songs are available once again on vinyl, for the first time in 50 years!

“That [they] have turned out, in the light of history, to be better than they seemed at the time, shows how advanced they were and how the taste buds have altered”. So wrote journalist Ralph J Gleason of the BEAU BRUMMELS in the liners to a 1968 LP compilation.

The San Francisco group signed to Warner Brothers in early 1966 after eighteen months with indie Autumn Records, where they had scored the influential Top 20 hits ‘Laugh, Laugh’ and ‘Just A Little.’ In that time the Brummels released two largely self-composed albums, toured the country and made numerous film and TV appearances, and help spearhead America’s new cutting-edge folk-rock-pop sound, along with their contemporaries The Byrds and Lovin’ Spoonful.

Collected here for the first time on vinyl LP, we present the complete run of non-LP sides and alternate mixes that The Beau Brummels subsequently issued on 45 for Warner Bros Records between 1966 and 1969, a period that witnessed their creative pinnacles “Triangle” (1967) and “Bradley’s Barn” (1968). All appear in their original, glorious mono format, drawn from the original masters.

Also included are two rare solo singles cut by lead vocalist Sal Valentino for WB at the tail end of the Brummels tenure, featuring the crème of Hollywood’s roots rock elite (Van Dyke Parks, Ry Cooder, Leon Russell, Clarence White, Chris Ethridge).
